When you drive a car, you can easily turn the wheels by simply turning the steering wheel, right? However, you should know that it’s not that simple.

There are a lot of other things going on between the tires and the steering wheel to make it happen.

As a car owner, you might think that it’s fine not to understand how your car’s steering works. However, it’s best to at least have a basic idea of your car’s steering.

1 How Does a Car Turn?

You might assume that whenever you turn your car, your front wheels will point in a similar direction. However, you’re wrong. That is not the case.

If you want your vehicle to turn smoothly, every wheel needs to follow a different circle. Because the interior wheel is following a circle with a tiny radius, it’s actually making a stiffer turn compared to the exterior wheel.

Obviously, this will be a lot more difficult to understand with words alone. However, if you look at the diagram of a rack and pinion steering system, you’ll understand this concept a lot better.

Though there are a couple of forms of steering systems available on the market, there are two most popular types. This includes the rack and pinion steering and the recirculating ball steering.

The rack and pinion steering system is commonly found on SUVs, small trucks, and standard cars. On the other hand, recirculating ball steering is mostly utilized for heavy cars.

2 Recirculating-Ball Steering

Nowadays, a lot of SUVs and heavy trucks use recirculating-ball steering for their steering systems. Compared to the rack and pinion system, the connection that turns the wheels is a bit different.

First of all, a worm gear can be found inside the recirculating-ball steering gear. You can imagine the gear in two components.

The first component is a metal block with a threaded hole in it. This block of metal has gear teeth cut into the exterior side. This engages a gear that moves the pitman’s arm.

Just like a bolt, the steering wheel links to a threaded rod. This rod penetrates the hole in the metal block.

Whenever you turn the wheel, the bolt turns as well. Rather than twisting further into the metal block as a normal bolt would, this bolt is held fixed.

Thus, it moves the block whenever it spins. This moves the gear that turns the wheels.

In the block, every single thread is filled with ball bearings rather than the bold engaging directly the threads. As the gear turns, these bearings recirculate through the gear.

There are two reasons why the balls exist in this system. First of all, they lower wear and friction in the gear.

The next reason is that they lower slop in gear. Usually, you will feel the slop whenever you change the direction of the steering wheel.

If the steering gear does not have balls, the teeth would come out of contact with one another for a time being. This will make the steering wheel feel loose.

A recirculating-ball system in a power steering works almost the same as racks and pinions. Help is offered by distributing higher-pressure fluid to a specific side of the block.

3 Rack and Pinion Steering

As of today, rack and pinion steering systems are becoming more and more popular when it comes to steering on SUVs, small trucks, and regular cars.

It’s so popular that steering racks systems have different types. This includes variable pitch, curved rack and pinion, and more.

The reason for this is that compared to recirculating-ball steering, this type of steering system is quite simple.

A metal tube encloses a rack and pinion gearset. At every rack’s end, you’ll find a rod. This rod is also known as a tie rod.

The pinion gear is connected to the car’s steering shaft. The gear rotates whenever you turn the steering wheel. This causes the rack to move as well.

The tie rod at every end of the rack attaches to the steering arm on the spindle. There are two things that this type of steering system performs.

First, it offers a gear reduction. This makes it easier for you to turn the wheels. Second, it converts the rotational movement of your car’s steering wheel to the linear motion required to turn the wheels.

On almost every car, it takes 3-4 complete revolutions of the steering wheel to make the wheels turn from far left to far right. This is called lock to lock turn.

The ratio of how far you turn the steering wheel to how far the wheels turn is called the steering ratio.

For instance, if a single complete revolution (360 degrees) of the steering wheel leads to the wheels of your vehicle turning 25 degrees, then the steering ratio is 360 divided by 25.

If your steering ratio is high, this means that you’ve got to turn the steering wheel more to get the wheels to turn a particular rotation.

However, you’ll need less effort due to the higher gear ratio.

In general, sports cars and lighter cars have lower steering ratios compared to trucks and heavy vehicles. The lower ratio offers the steering a faster response.

This means that you do not have to turn the steering wheel as much to get the wheels to turn to a particular rotation. Of course, this is ideal for sports cars.

These small vehicles are light enough that even with the lower ratio, the effort you need to turn your car isn’t excessive.

A couple of vehicles have variable pitch rack and pinion steering. This utilizes a rack and pinion system that has more tooth pitches in the middle compared to what it has on the exterior side.

Because of this, a vehicle with variable pitch will respond faster when starting a turn. Aside from that, it also lowers the effort near the turning limits of the wheel.

4 How Does Rack and Pinion Work as a Steering System?

This type of steering system utilizes a gear-set to transform the circular movement of your car’s steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels.

Aside from that, it also offers a gear reduction. This makes it easier for you to turn the wheels of your vehicle.

5 What Is a Variable Pitch in Rack and Pinion?

A variable pitch rack and pinion have a row of rack teeth. It has two end fixed pitch areas and a middle-fixed pitch area.

The variable-pitch area is interpolated between each of the end fixed pitch areas and the middle-fixed pitch area.

The pitch grows from the small-pitch and fixed middle area to the large-pitched and fixed end areas.

When it comes to the variable-pitch racked bar, the actual meshing width constantly declines from the center of the rack teeth’s row to each end.

The middle-fixed pitch region has a tiny pitch to lower response to the operation of a steering wheel. Thus, it prevents excessive response at the start of a steering movement.

Each end fixed pitch region is big pitched to improve response to the movement of the steering wheel. This improves response to a big-angled steering movement.

6 Why Do Some Manufacturers Use Variable Pitch for Their Rack and Pinion Steering System?

Of course, there’s a reason why some car manufacturers use variable pitch. This is because whenever you’re turning greater angles, the steering will turn a lot quicker as the teeth on the rack decline in pitch towards every end of the rack.

However, the teeth in the middle of the rack increase in pitch. Thus, the steering isn’t too sensitive while driving in a straight line.

7 When Do You Need A Variable Pitch Rack System?

The linear displacement is constant in a normal pitched rack. It doesn’t provide any additional comfort the drive to the driver at low speed or at high speed.

On the other hand, the linear travel by the rack differs as the pinion moves to the extreme ends in a variable pitch rack.

Whenever the car is in the normal range of movement corresponding to a medium to high vehicle speed range, the displacement of the rack is quite tiny for particular steering input.

Meanwhile, in a low vehicle speed range where a huge steering input is frequently required, the displacement of the rack for a particular steering input is increased. Thus, the rack gain is increased.

By using racks and pinions, a traditional variable gear ratio could be obtained in which the rack teeth are created by changing the pitch of the rack tooth.

The rack teeth’s pitch is gradually increased in these racks as the distance from the neutral position is increased.

8 Common Issues with Rack and Pinion Steering

We all know that a steering system is vital if you want to control your vehicle properly. Thus, it is vital for you to know how to diagnose a problem.

This will help you determine any steering issues and fix them as soon as possible before they become a major problem.

When it comes to rack and pinion steering, there are a couple of common issues. It does not matter if you’ve got a normal rack and pinion, variable pitch, or curved rack and pinion. Here are some issues:

1) Odor That Smells Like Burning Oil

For those who don’t know, the fluid found inside your power steering system smells almost the same as burning oil.

That is why if you notice this odor when you’re driving your car, it is an indication that your steering gearbox is overheating.

As soon as you smell burning oil when driving, make sure you stop your vehicle immediately. You might want to contact a mechanic for help. The reason for this is that driving with an overheating steering gearbox can lead to a fire.

2) Grinding Sound When Steering

Do you hear a grinding sound when you steer your car? If so, you should know that it isn’t normal. It means that there’s metal-on-metal contact inside the steering gearbox.

One of the main causes of this problem is the lack of lubrication. Try to turn your car right or left. If you clearly hear the grinding sound, then it means you have this issue.

Just to be safe, you might want to hire a professional mechanic to check your car. There’s a huge possibility that you might have to replace your entire steering gearbox.

3) Leaking Power Steering Fluid

You should always keep in mind that the steering fluid levels of your car shouldn’t decrease. If it does, then you’ve got a leak. Ignoring this problem can lead to tight steering.

This might not appear like a major issue. However, if you ignore it for too long, it can cause the steering rack and the steering gearbox to break or overheat.

That is why it’s always a good idea to fix this issue as soon as possible while it’s still a cheap and easy task. You should not wait for it to become a bigger problem and costs more.

4) Extremely Tight Steering Wheel

Do you notice that your steering wheel is becoming more and more difficult to turn? If so, it is an indication that there is a lack of pressure from the power steering unit or an issue with the steering rack.

As usual, it’s always best to hire a professional mechanic to take a look at your vehicle to determine the issue.

If you don’t know anything about cars and steering systems, you might think that you need to completely replace your rack and pinion system when you see the signs above.

However, keep in mind that a rack and pinion replacement service can be extremely expensive.

That is why we mentioned above that it’s good to have at least a basic idea of how your steering works.

As of now, you probably know that the steering system of your car is extremely complex. It contains a lot of various parts that can deteriorate over time.

Sometimes, rack and pinion can be misdiagnosed. This leads to unnecessary costly repairs that do not fix the issue.

Thus, before you jump to conclusions and replace your entire steering system, it is a wise move to inspect other parts as well.

9 How Much Does It Cost to Replace Rack and Pinion?

As mentioned above, we recommend that you don’t replace your entire rack and pinion steering system right away when you notice any issues.

The reason for this is that it will cost you a lot of money. Thus, you need to prepare yourself for some major investments.

A rack and pinion replacement service will cost you around $1,500 to $2,000. This includes labor. The cost greatly depends on the age, model, and make of your vehicle.

Typically, the rack and pinion steering system cost around $700 to $1,000. On the other hand, labor expenses will cost you around $500.

For instance, the rack and pinion for a Toyota 2015 Corolla will cost you $700. If you add the labor cost of $500, you’ll have a repair bill of $1,200.

Obviously, these are simply rough estimates. There are a lot of other factors that can affect the overall cost of the service.

Perhaps the rack and pinion replacement for your vehicle might be more affordable compared to what we’ve mentioned above.

Regardless of these factors, you should know that high-end and luxury vehicles will cost a lot more.

Lucky for you, rack and pinion steering systems typically last quite long. Typically, they’ll last for around 100,000 miles. However, they’ll last more than that if you maintain your car properly.

Another thing to keep in mind is if it’s worth replacing the rack and pinion steering system of your vehicle.

You need to determine the value of your vehicle first. Perhaps it’s more ideal to simply purchase a new car instead of constantly fixing your old vehicle whenever an issue arises.

9 Can You Fix the Car Yourself?

Since labor costs $500 when it comes to a rack and pinion replacement service, you probably think you can save that money by doing the job yourself.

However, the question is can you really do it? Most of the time, you’ll read some tips online about people saving money on car repairs by doing the job themselves.

Unfortunately, it all depends on your skills and knowledge of the steering system. This is particularly true since it’s perhaps the most complicated system in your car. You might not even understand the diagram of a rack and pinion when you look at it.

That is why most mechanics do not recommend DIY rack and pinion replacement, especially if you don’t have the right tools and skills to do it.

Of course, there are tons of excellent resources out there that will teach you how to do it properly. However, is it worth the risk? Do you really want to risk the safety of your vehicle just to save $500?

If you don’t know what you’re doing, chances are you’ll make things worse. If this happens, you should expect the cost of repairs to be more expensive than before.

Because of this, you should leave the job to professionals. Though you’ll likely spend more than $1,500 for the service, you can guarantee that your car will be fixed properly.
